Statement

My work is textured with newspaper and gesso before rubs of color top it, creating images that appear when you “watch” the art. I turn the canvas as I paint, creating motion and interest. Each piece is unique, can be hung in any direction, giving the opportunity for four paintings to show. It’s been said that a Sue Berce painting brings conversation and personality into the room.

Biography

My background is in education and administration, not art, yet art saved me from depression and challenged me to go on. My husband’s death and my breast cancer put me in a tailspin and it took years to find a way out. With serious health challenges and scares, the loss of more people in my life, I fought to find light in my world.

Lying in bed, sick and sad, I told myself that writing, drawing, anything creative would be uplifting so with paper and pencil, it started, the path forward. The drawings and notes led me to painting simple things at first then more complex. Realism let to impressionistic work and then abstraction became the voice of this artist.

The times my very survival was in doubt and loved ones prayed for hope and chances for a future, I dug deep for help. Art, at every turn, gave me hope. With every painting, showing, award, strength grew into a resolve to survive and overcome the many surgeries and threats to health faced.

Art saved me.
